General Search for Stars with Rapid Optical Variations: Test Fields
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a search for stars exhibiting short time-scale optical light variations. Our search employs archival data taken by the ROTSE1 telephoto array in two eight degree fields-of-view. This is a test study considering two fields which overlaps fields previously mined for variables, but with different data and search techniques. Each field was observed for approximately six continuous hours. We employ a general search strategy based on statistical properties of the observed lightcurves for each object. The analysis is sensitive to sources with variations < 0.25 day and > 0.1 mag and with mean magnitudes between 9.5 mag to 14 mag. We selected 42 variable star candidates, of which 17 are new detections. Attempts at classification yield four new W UMa systems and two new δ Scu stars. The remaining eleven transient detections exhibit incomplete lightcurves and require further study for classification.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملThe University of New South Wales Extrasolar Planet Search : a catalogue of variable stars from fields observed 2004 – 2007
We present a new catalogue of variable stars compiled from data taken for the University of New South Wales Extrasolar Planet Search. From 2004 October to 2007 May, 25 target fields were each observed for 1–4 months, resulting in ∼ 87000 high precision light curves with 1600–4400 data points. We have extracted a total of 850 variable light curves, 659 of which do not have a counterpart in eithe...

Nearly simultaneous multiband monitoring of blazars is very limited and most studies reported in literature are conflicting, too. Although optical variability on intra-night timescales is now a well established phenomenon for blazars, its relationship to long-term variability remains unclear. Possible clues could come from monitoring the optical spectrum for correlation with brightness. The pr...
متن کاملHigh-resolution Spectra of Very Low-Mass Stars
We present the results of high-resolution (1-0.4 Å) optical spectroscopy of a sample of very low-mass stars. These data are used to examine the kinematics of the stars at the bottom of the hydrogen-burning main sequence. No evidence is found for a significant difference between the kinematics of the stars in our sample with I–K > 3.5 (MBol ∼ 12.8) and those of more massive M-dwarfs (MBol ≈ 7 − ...
متن کاملTowards understanding rapid line-profile and light variations of early-type stars 3. Some thoughts and reflections
The current situation in the research of rapid lineprofile and light variations of early-type stars is critically reviewed. It is suggested that the ultimate understanding of the physical processes causing these variations can only come from an open-minded and complex approach to the problem and from systematic observational effort. It is argued that the results of the search for periodicities ...
